“We Are Ready If Europe Wants War”: Putin’s Stark Warning as Ukraine Peace Talks Stumble

In a blunt and uncompromising message delivered on December 2, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin told European powers that Moscow stands fully prepared for war but only if Europe initiates it. His remarks, among the most forceful issued by him in recent times, come amid growing frustration over stalled peace negotiations for the war in Ukraine.

“We are not planning to go to war with Europe,” Putin said. “But if Europe wants to and starts, we are ready right now.”

The Warning: Europe on Notice

Speaking at an investment forum in Moscow just hours before hosting a US delegation for high-stakes peace talks Putin didn’t mince his words. He accused European nations of obstructing diplomatic efforts and insisted they had “no peaceful agenda.” According to him, their approach has undermined the ongoing process to end the conflict in Ukraine.

Putin went so far as to claim Europe had effectively locked itself out of negotiations by severing contacts with Moscow:

“If Europe all of a sudden wants to start a war … we are ready right now.”

He warned that any war started by Europe would be met with such overwhelming force that there might be “no one left to negotiate peace with.”

Peace Talks, Stalled And Blame on Europe

Putin’s comments came on the eve of a crucial meeting in the Kremlin with a US delegation led by envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner. The discussions revolved around a revised 28-point plan to end the nearly four-year war in Ukraine. Yet, despite five hours of talks, no real breakthrough emerged.

While the Kremlin insists it hasn’t outright rejected the plan, it has flagged key European-backed demands as “unacceptable.” That, according to Moscow, has undermined the entire peace process.

Moscow claims Europe’s refusal to accommodate Russia’s conditions particularly concerning territorial control and security terms is the real reason peace talks remain bogged down.

From “Surgical Operation” to Full-Blown War Threat

On the conflict in Ukraine itself, Putin reiterated that Russia’s military campaign has been a “surgical operation,” not a full-scale war against Europe. However, he warned that if confronted directly, Russia would abandon restraint.

That shift in tone from controlled operations in Ukraine to a potential broader conflict with Europe has raised alarm among Western capitals and analysts alike.

Russian media reports that even seemingly tit-for-tat incidents such as attacks on Russian tankers in the Black Sea could trigger retaliation. Putin threatened to cut off Ukraine’s access to the sea in response.

What This Means for Europe and the World

Tense Diplomacy: Putin’s remarks come at a critical juncture. With US envoys in Moscow seeking a peace deal and European powers wary of conceding territory or security leverage, the chance of agreement appears dim.

Eroding Trust: By singling out Europe for derailing peace efforts, Russia seeks to sow division between European capitals and Washington complicating future diplomatic initiatives.

Heightened Risk: The shift from “surgical operations” to threats of full-scale war with Europe should the continent “start it,” raises the stakes and the fear of a much wider conflict.

European leaders and defense experts now face a stark choice: double down on deterrence or risk leaving the door open to Russian escalation.

Europe’s Reaction: Firm Denial, New Resolve

Immediately following Putin’s message, several European officials condemned his warning. Many accused Moscow of not genuinely seeking peace and of using diplomacy to buy time while rebuilding military strength.

Meanwhile, the leadership of NATO and the European Union reiterated their support for Ukraine warning that any Russian aggression would face significant countermeasures.

And with no consensus emerging from the Moscow talks, calls for renewed military backing to Kyiv are only growing louder.

What’s Next?

Uncertainty looms large. If Russia truly follows through on its warning, the consequences could reshape Europe’s security landscape. For now, all eyes are on Washington and Brussels and whether the faltering peace attempt will be followed by renewed brinkmanship or a last-chance push for truce.

Until then, Putin has made it clear: Europe may have bought a little time but Russia says it remains “ready right now.
