Nitish Kumar Takes Oath as Bihar CM for Historic 10th Term After NDA’s Record 202-Seat Victory

JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar has been sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar for an unprecedented 10th term, following the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) emphatic victory in the 2025 Bihar Assembly Elections. The oath ceremony, held at the historic Gandhi Maidan in Patna, marked a significant political milestone and showcased the NDA’s strong resurgence in the state.

Nitish Kumar, aged 74, has been a central figure in Bihar politics for decades. Despite skepticism over his relevance during the election campaign, his leadership once again proved decisive as the NDA secured a sweeping mandate. Alongside the CM, BJP leaders Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha took oath as Deputy Chief Ministers. A total of 24 ministers were also sworn in by Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, in the presence of top national leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

A day earlier, Nitish Kumar was unanimously chosen as the leader of both the JD(U) and NDA Legislature Parties during a meeting with newly elected MLAs. He then formally resigned and immediately staked claim to form the new government, completing the constitutional process smoothly.

NDA’s Resounding Victory

The 2025 elections delivered a historic mandate as the NDA won 202 out of 243 seats, crossing the 200-seat mark for only the second time in Bihar’s political history. Previously, the alliance achieved this milestone in 2010 with 206 seats. In sharp contrast, the Mahagathbandhan managed to win just 35 seats, marking one of its weakest performances.

The NDA’s seat distribution reflected a balanced and powerful coalition:

  • BJP: 89 seats
  • JD(U): 85 seats
  • LJP (Ram Vilas): 19 seats
  • HAM-S: 5 seats
  • Rashtriya Lok Morcha: 4 seats

The opposition suffered significant losses:

  • RJD: 25 seats
  • Congress: 6 seats
  • CPI(ML)(L): 2 seats
  • IIP: 1 seat
  • CPI(M): 1 seat
  • AIMIM: 5 seats
  • BSP: 1 seat

The elections, held on November 6 and 11, saw a remarkable 67.13% voter turnout, the highest since 1951. Women played a notable role in shaping the mandate with an impressive 71.6% turnout, surpassing the male turnout of 62.8%.

Nitish Kumar’s Political Stability

Nitish Kumar’s 10th term is not just a personal milestone but also a strategic win for the NDA. His leadership continues to be viewed as a stabilizing factor in Bihar politics. Despite political fluctuations over the years, his administrative experience and governance record remain central to voter trust.

With strong backing from the BJP and other allies, the new government is expected to push forward with targeted development programs aimed at boosting employment, infrastructure, education, and law and order. The overwhelming support from women voters also suggests that women-centric welfare schemes may see further expansion.

The Road Ahead for Bihar

As the new government takes charge, Bihar’s immediate focus is expected to be on accelerating growth in key sectors. Infrastructure development, school reforms, health services, and public welfare schemes are likely to remain at the top of the agenda. The stability of the NDA coalition, coupled with support from the Centre, positions the state for a potentially transformative five-year term.

Nitish Kumar’s historic return symbolizes both continuity and renewed expectations. With a powerful mandate, a unified alliance, and a clear roadmap, Bihar enters a new phase of governance with hopes of fast-paced progress and long-term stability.

The 2025 Bihar Assembly election results mark a historic electoral shift for the state. Nitish Kumar’s oath-taking for the 10th time is not merely a political milestone but a testament to decades of administrative experience, evolving leadership, and the trust of millions of voters.

With an energized cabinet, a clear mandate, and national leadership standing firmly behind him, Bihar is poised for a period of strong governance and ambitious development.
