India’s Blind Women’s Cricket Team, who recently scripted history by claiming the inaugural Blind Women’s T20 World Cup title in Colombo, received a grand felicitation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Led by captain Deepika TC, the team remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and clinched a remarkable seven-wicket win over Nepal in the final last weekend.
During the special meeting at the Prime Minister’s residence, Modi praised the players for their exceptional discipline, teamwork, and fighting spirit, calling them true inspirations for the nation. The team presented the Prime Minister with a signed cricket bat as a token of gratitude. In return, Modi gifted them a cricket ball engraved with ‘Vande Mataram’, symbolizing the pride and emotion behind their significant achievement.
The champions dedicated their World Cup victory to India’s armed forces, reflecting their deep sense of patriotism. They expressed joy over the growing recognition of blind cricket in the country but also highlighted the ongoing struggles they face including inadequate funding and the absence of BCCI affiliation.
Despite rising global achievements, India’s blind women cricketers continue to battle for better infrastructure, sponsorship support, and mainstream acknowledgment. Players and coaches have reiterated that consistent financial and institutional backing is crucial to nurture and promote disabled sports talent in India.
This remarkable triumph in Colombo has strengthened calls for broader support systems to empower blind athletes and ensure they receive the same respect and sporting opportunities as their mainstream counterparts. As the champions return home with gold and pride, the nation celebrates their unbeatable spirit hopeful that their success will pave the way for brighter prospects and recognition in the future.
